SPECIAL SUPERVISION

Program Description: The Special Supervision Services Program (SSS) is provided for drivers whose driver license has been revoked because of convictions for two DUI offenses within five years or three within ten years. It is a special requirement that the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) offers to obtain a hardship driver license after a revocation due to DUI convictions. Participation in a Special Supervision Services program involves obtaining a letter of eligibility from the (DHSMV), then applying at a state licensed DUI program, undergoing an eligibility confirmation process and once accepted, participating in 30 minute periodic update meetings for the length of the driver license revocation period. The meetings are monthly for the first year and reduce in frequency over the life of the program.

Length: For two DUI convictions for incidents occurring within five years the license revocation is for five years. The driver must serve at least one-year without driving or consuming alcohol or drugs, other than those used as directed or prescribed by a physician. The driver may then have the opportunity to obtain a hardship driver license if they participate in the Special Supervision Services program for the remaining four years of the license revocation.

For three DUI convictions for incidents occurring within ten years the license revocation is for ten years. The driver must serve at least two years of the revocation without driving before being eligible to apply for a hardship license. They must not have consumed alcohol or drugs, other than those used as directed or prescribed by a physician, for at least 12 months prior to applying. To obtain and maintain the hardship driver license the individual must participate in a Special Supervision Services program for the remaining eight years of the revocation period.
